In the Napoleonic era, the Palais-Royal, adjacent to the tree-lined area of the Louvre, is home to many of the best restaurants in Paris. The Véry restaurant was a leading restaurant at the time with more than a dozen soups, over 20 fish dishes, 15 beef main courses, 20 lamb main dishes and dozens of side dishes. The novelist Honoré de Balzac often eats at Véry and consumes a large amount of oysters, fish, meat dishes, fruits, wines and liqueurs. This is the favorite place for the gourmet writer Grimod delaReynière, which he considers to be the best restaurant in France.
